Alec Baldwin accident starts to change the industry: ‘The Rookie’ bans ‘real’ guns

The ABC series starring Nathan Fillion has been the first production to cancel the ‘realistic’ shootings.

The film and series industry is beginning to change due to the accident that occurred while filming Rust, where Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins with a blank gun that contained a live bullet.

The first production to ban these weapons has been The Rookie, the ABC series starring Nathan Fillion. But what exactly have they banned? On American shootings real pistols with blank bullets are normally used so that it is much more realistic when shooting. Sometimes they are real weapons and sometimes plastic.

In the case of Alec Baldwin’s accident, it was a real one, but with a bullet in the chamber that was not extracted at the time. Now, because of what happened, the ABC series has banned these real weapons, changing them for compressed air ones. The creator of the series, Alexi Hawley, has launched a new policy through a statement published The Hollywood Reporter:

As of today, ‘The Rookie’ policy is for all shots on set to be air pistols with flashing tips added in post-production via CGI. There will be no more ‘real’ weapons in the series. The safety of our cast and crew is too important. Any risk is too much
