Elton John in Paris, Billie Eilish in New York: a galaxy of stars mobilized for the planet

(AFP) – Elton John for an appearance-event in Paris, Stevie Wonder in Los Angeles or Billie Eilish in New York: rain of megastars in concert this Saturday in the world, at the bedside of a threatened planet, under the aegis of the NGO Global Citizen.

In Paris, at the Champ-de-Mars (from 5.30 p.m.), there will therefore be two monuments together: The Eiffel Tower and Elton John, who maintained his presence before being operated on for a hip, an intervention which will result in a further postponement of his farewell world tour.

“I don’t want to drop a charity,” the “I’m Still Standing” performer recently said in a statement. “It’s about five songs, it’s a very different physical job than playing for almost three hours each night on tour and traveling nightly from country to country,” continued Sir Elton, 74. . “After that, I will undergo the surgery that will allow me to resume touring in January 2022 in New Orleans.”

The interpreter of “Rocket Man” will share the stage in the French capital with other stars such as Ed Sheeran, the Black Eyed Peas, Christine and the Queens or even Måneskin. The winners of Eurovision, initially scheduled in London, posted footage of their rehearsal, with the Iron Lady in the background. DJ Snake, announced at the start, is no longer on the bill.

Nearly 20,000 spectators are expected in Paris on the Champ-de-Mars. All tickets – free – have been distributed, according to the organization. To get them, all you had to do was register on the Global Citizen website and support the NGO’s action by signing petitions or sharing messages on social networks intended to put pressure on the big boys of this world. The themes targeted are “climate change, vaccine equity and famine”, according to the organizers.

– Like Live Aid in 1985 –

As for Live Aid, a charity show given in 1985 from several cities around the world at the then initiative of Bob Geldof to fight against famine in Ethiopia (and in which Elton John was already participating), shows are scheduled in other megalopolises.

In New York, in Central Park, there will also be Coldplay, Jennifer Lopez or Lizzo. The Greek Theater in Los Angeles will also host Adam Lambert, Demi Lovato and ONEREPUBLIC. As for the VIP squares, Prince Harry and Meghan are announced in Central Park.

TV performances will also be broadcast, such as Andrea Bocelli’s from Tuscany or BTS from Seoul. The performances will be visible on Apple Music, Apple TV App, YouTube, Twitter, as well as via various broadcasters (TF1 / TMC in France, TV Azteca in Mexico, the BBC in the United Kingdom, ABC, ABC News Live, iHeartRadio, Hulu, The Roku Channel, FX and Time in the US, etc.).

Behind this event is Global Citizen, an NGO that describes itself as a “movement of engaged citizens”. This is the baby of Hugh Evans, an Australian “philanthropic prodigy,” according to the New York Times.

Global Citizen is used to major events, such as its “Vax Live” in the spring in Los Angeles, a concert in favor of vaccination against Covid-19 (and against disinformation). Jennifer Lopez or the Foo Fighters were on stage while US President Joe Biden, the Pope, actors Ben Affleck or Sean Penn delivered video messages.
