Fans of the fantasy saga were surely surprised by the character’s fate. Behind it there is a decision of the writing team.

Watch out, SPOILERS! Do not continue reading if you have not seen season 2 of ‘The Witcher’ and want to continue without knowing anything about the series.

Season 2 of The Witcher has introduced new characters, but not all of them will have a long future in the Netflix series. Eskel, the warrior wizard played by Basil Eidenbenz, has met the end at the hands of Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) himself, much to the chagrin of fans of the franchise. This has generated a lot of controversy and the ‘showrunner’ Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has come out to defend her decision.

What is all the fuss about? Mainly because Eskel does not die in novels or games. In the universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski, Eskel is a sorcerer friend of Geralt since they were very young. They were raised together in Kaer Morhen and participated hand-in-hand in Trials as part of their initiation into their magic career. They lived a thousand and one adventures and were very close, that’s why the fans they were very surprised to see that, in fiction, he is an aggressive character, rather than the calm and polite gentleman they knew.

The first surprised is Geralt, who after a warm greeting, realizes that something is wrong with his old friend. It is not like him to amuse himself with the prostitutes of Kaer Morhen, just as he does not usually attack him. The reason for his change is that he was infected by Leshy. He just had a fight with him, where he was injured. It doesn’t take long for him to transform into a monster, forcing the protagonist to kill his friend.

But, Why didn’t they capture him and try to cure him? In the special This is how The Witcher was made, Lauren S. Hissrich says they had no intention of letting him die. In their initial plans, a new sorcerer was to be Leshy’s victim, but they changed their minds for good reason. Eskel’s death means something to Geralt and helps motivate him to follow a certain path.

It was his death that changed everything for Geralt. I think that accelerated Geralt’s need to find out what was wrong with Ciri and quickly. Because now that he knows, he runs the risk of losing her and his siblings if he doesn’t succeed. We wanted to motivate the development of this character in this aspect

After what happened with Eskel, Geralt realizes that Kaer Morhen, who until now was his refuge, was not safe and neither was Ciri. The event transforms the way the protagonist sees the world and the viewer sees it. For this reason, Eskel had to die. “We had to make sure that we were really heading home at that point, that the Continent is constantly changing, and is there still a place for warlocks?” Hissrich muses.
