How were Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire hiding on the set of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’?

Marvel has been improving its anti-theft technique for more than 10 years. From the beginnings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Nick Fury reunited the Avengers.

It was the year 2008 when, in an almost improvised way, Kevin Feige began to weave his intricate Marvel Cinematic Universe. It all started in the credit titles of Iron Man, featuring Nick Fury asking Tony Stark if he really thought he was the only superhero in the world. “Mr. Stark, you are part of a larger universe. You just don’t know him.”, said the director of SHIELD This gave rise to the Avengers Initiative that has led the studio to keep hundreds of secrets in the last decade. They are experts at it and have done it again in Spider-Man: No Way Home, this time in a big way.

In the new film of the Spider-Man saga, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker has to deal with his peers from parallel universes, that is, with Tobey Maguire’s Peter and Andrew Garfield’s. Together they form an exceptional team to take down the villains who have also managed to change reality, such as Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Electro, Sandman and Lizard. A magnificent team that had to be a real loss for production: how did they manage to hide them so that no one would know they were there?

Marvel has done a good job with this task. Although some photos were leaked that placed the actors on the set, no one knew very well how they were going to participate in the film. If they used the same technique that they used with Samuel L. Jackson and his Nick Fury, the actors They got into a car that took them straight to the set, where the camera was waiting for them ready to record. The filming was carried out with the minimum number of technicians possible and no one used his name: not in calls or signs in the dressing room or when calling him out loud during the recording.

As confirmed by Holland himself, Willem Dafoe always wore a hood that covered his face. This gave rise to a very curious anecdote. “It was actually a funny story when I first met Willem. Obviously, at that time It was a secret that all the villains in the movie would be there. So they walked the sets in these capes“says the actor,” And naturally they were very excited to come back and bring these characters to life. So they came on set a week before we started shooting. […] I ran into a guy in a cape and I said, ‘Watch out, buddy!’ He took off his hood and I was almost really scared; I was like, ‘Oh shit. The goblin is here. ‘ It was lovely. It was really wonderful. “

Have Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire been removed from the ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer? The clues to his possible appearance in the film

Although it is not officially confirmed that they have hidden Maguire and Garfield inside cars, it is logical to think that they resorted to a technique similar to that of previous tapes. In terms of promotion, the study did so in an exemplary manner. To get started, they deleted them from all trailers. Sony released trailers carefully chosen to show no Peter Parker other than Holland’s. If you revisit the previews, you will see that there are many scenes from the end of the film where only one Spider-Man appears, instead of the three who actually fought together.

Of course, this has entailed a large number of lies by the three actors. They have all been asked about the issue on multiple occasions in recent months and have always denied the Spidey meeting. It is appreciated that all team members have gone to such great lengths to keep the reveals safe and to make the MCU more amazing than ever. With the multiverse going, the possibilities grow exponentially.

In the early days of the MCU, Feige hadn’t planned to tie it all together in such a detailed way. The studio’s plans were to dedicate separate films to each superhero, but they achieved a great feat and something unusual in the world of cinema so far. Those little connections through Nick Fury have made it possible for us to now see Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland fight hand-to-hand. Three actors bringing the same character to life in the same movie? Only Marvel is capable of something like this.
