In the special ‘Return to Hogwarts’, the actors remember that moment in which their characters realize that they are in love and how bad they had it.
Ron and Hermione’s chemistry as a couple can be debated by fans of Harry PotterBut there is no doubt that the relationship between Rupert Grint and Emma Watson was totally brotherly. While the writers were preparing their romance on the big screen, they were bonding more and more as brothers, so when it came time to kiss on camera, the two bite the bullet and accepted the challenge. “It was one of the most complicated things I had to do,” acknowledges the actress in Harry Potter: Regreso a Hogwarts, the special reunion now available on HBO Max.
“It is a relationship that they have repressed for so long. The public is dying to see that kiss”recalls Grint. The writers crafted this romance installment after installment, and fans were looking forward to seeing them together. When it was time to record the long-awaited approach, everyone, both the members of the production team and the spectators, were expectant.
“There is a scene that should be finished this week and that I want to talk about when you read it. This week we are going to do the Ron and Hermione kiss,” David Yates announced one day of filming, much to the annoyance of the two actors. “What? This week?” Watson asked somewhat flustered. The director treated it as if it were the most intimate scene on the film. Due to the relationship between the actors, it practically was. “We had been waiting seven movies. I spoke to the two of them in their caravans, to make sure they were comfortable. It was like preparing them for a big sporting event. Something like, ‘Come on, guys, you can do it. It’s going to be great, “says Yates.
The loneliness of Emma Watson, teenage crushes and other revelations of ‘Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts’
When they met face to face, the actors couldn’t stop laughing. At the meeting they remember that they were afraid of ruining the scene because they did not get into action.
It was supposed to be a dramatic kiss, but you and I lost focus. We couldn’t stop laughing and I was very afraid that it would never work out because we couldn’t take it seriously. Kissing Rupert was one of the hardest things I had to do, “says Watson.
Behind him was Daniel Radcliffe making things worse. “I did not help to improve the situation because You have always told me that I behaved like an idiot and was like: ‘I’m going to go to the set to see how you give the lot“confesses the actor with a laugh. He was not the only one. Everyone wanted to be a witness of that moment, which certainly did not help Watson and Grint get into the shoes of their characters.
As the living portrait of the characters that they are, Watson says that she had to be the one who took the reins of the scene because she knew that her partner was not going to do it. She jumped into the pool and he got carried away, albeit with quite a shock in between. “I knew I would have to be the one to start the matter, because if it were up to Rupert … So I took the initiative. I needed to give strength to the kiss to be able to do it,” she recalls. “In the first take I could almost make out Rupert’s surprised face”laughs the director.
Grint acknowledges that she felt like she was going to pass out and that she only remembers her friend’s face getting closer and closer. “Every time you talk about this it sounds like it was a nightmare to you,” says Watson, laughing without stopping. They had a hard time filming, but now they remember it with great affection and humor.
