In 2021, American viewers were more attracted to sport than news channels

The Covid-19 pandemic may still be the most discussed subject on Twitter in France, on American television, things are quite different. American viewers have visibly tired of news channels. Have they gotten used to the Covid-19 pandemic? Do they no longer support the too anxiety-provoking news? One thing is certain. In 2021, Americans preferred to take a break after the events of the last presidential election.

According to the audiences collected by Nielsen *, the American Médiamétrie, reported by Variety, live sport excited Americans in 2021. Specialized sports channels have therefore benefited. ESPN, the sports channel, increased its viewership by 11% in one year, averaging 1.6 million prime time viewers. ESPN2, the extreme sports channel, even improved its audience by 48% compared to 2020.

NBC Sports saw a 17% increase while Fox Sports 1 gained 25%. Even sports channels considered niche, such as golf and tennis, have benefited from this enthusiasm with an increase in their audiences of 12% and 34%.

CBS holds its own thanks to the Super Bowl

Other more general channels benefited from growth thanks to their coverage of sporting events. This is the case of TNT with 10% growth thanks to its broadcast of the NBA and March Madness, the very popular university basketball championship in the United States. CBS, which remains the most watched channel in the United States, has managed to stabilize its audiences thanks to the broadcast of the Super Bowl. At the time of the supremacy of streaming platforms, NBC even managed to increase its number of followers by 9% thanks to the broadcasting of the Summer Olympics.

Conversely, MSNBC, CNN and Fox News have all seen their audiences drop drastically with -28%, -38% and -34% respectively. If the information has visibly less interested American viewers, the business has also suffered public disenchantment (-48% for Fox Business Network and -13% for CNBC).
