In Italy, music lovers reconnect with local music

(ETX Daily Up) – Rarely has the Italian music scene been so buzzing in 2021. Local artists like Rkomi and Måneskin have largely dominated the country’s charts, according to Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana. A success that reconciles Italian youth with its musical heritage.

Italian music has conquered world airwaves only on rare occasions. The artists of La Botte enjoyed great international success in the era of italo-disco and eurodance, but did not really convince their compatriots. Those days are over.

According to the Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana (FIMI), all the records appearing in the Top 10 of the most listened to albums in the country are sung in Italian. Among them are “Taxi Driver” by Rkomi, “Sangiovanni” by the artist of the same name and “Teatro d’ira – Vol. I” by Måneskin. The same goes for the ranking of the most popular pieces in La Botte in 2021. It is dominated by local talents like Blanco and Madame.

The phenomenon does not stop with the talents appearing in the charts of the transalpine country. Thus, 479 albums by 302 artists crossed the symbolic bar of 10 million streams in 2021. In comparison, only 134 albums by 105 artists had exceeded the equivalent threshold of 10,000 copies sold ten years earlier.

Italian music in full dolce vita

“During an even complicated year, we have witnessed the strong assertion of Italian music on the international scene and the continuous generational artistic transformation in our country,” said Enzo Mazza, CEO of FIMI, in a statement. “This year’s results reveal the important behind-the-scenes work of record labels, which have put all new technologies at the service of music, which is constantly evolving in the age of streaming”.

This new popularity of Italian music goes beyond the borders of La Botte. Local artists like Mahmood and Måneskin have become the darling of media in the Mediterranean basin. In the summer of 2019, the singer from the outskirts of Milan finished second in the Eurovision Song Contest. Two years later, the Italian rock group won the European musical competition, ahead of French representative Barbara Pravi.

Following this victory, Måneskin is propelled into the world Top 10 of Spotify thanks to their song “Zitti e Buoni'”. Another consecration: he is dubbed by the New York Times, which wonders if he can even “conquer the world” despite the language barrier. Nothing seems to stop the group, and Italian music in general.
