Cary Fukunaga touches on the debate surrounding the famous agent’s saga. The new installment, Daniel Craig’s last as 007, opens on October 1.
The Bond saga needs a female revolution. That is what he has declared to The Hollywood Reporter Cary Fukunaga, director de No time to die. In the middle of a conversation about the role of women in the cinema, the filmmaker assures that the famous franchise has duties to do and, although they cannot change the protagonist suddenly, they can modify many of the elements that surround him. “You can’t make Bond a different person overnight. But you can certainly change the world around him and the way he interacts with that world,” Fukunaga begins.
It is a story about a white man who is a spy in this world, but you have to be willing to get close and do your homework so that the female characters are more than just gadgets.
These duties have been on the saga’s agenda for a long time. For No time to die They have had the talent of Phoebe Waller-Bridge when writing the script. “I think that’s the expectation, a woman writing strong female roles, but it’s something that Barbara [Broccoli, productora ejecutiva] wanted. From the first conversations with her, that was a very marked path, “says Fukunaga.
When the scriptwriter arrived, the script was already underway, but she was able to contribute by developing the female characters that already existed in that first sketch. We are talking about Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), Nomi (Lashana Lynch) and Paloma (Ana de Armas). Just watch the trailer to see that there has been an evolution in them.
Waller-Bridge’s thinking is very similar to Fukunaga’s in that, rather than changing Bond, what he has to adapt is the world in which he moves. “Much has been said about whether [la franquicia de Bond] it’s relevant now because of how he is and how he treats women, “Waller-Bridge continues.” I think that’s stupid. I think it is absolutely current now. It just has to grow. It has to evolve and the important thing is that the film treats women appropriately. He doesn’t have to. He has to stay true to this character, “he declared to Deadline in 2019.
Recently, Universal Pictures published a trailer to introduce Nomi and Paloma, the two new additions who are going to give a lot to talk about. Therefore, the path has already begun and it is only necessary to follow it in the future. Remember that No time to die premieres on October 1 in theaters in Spain.
