Mario Camus, director of ‘La Colmena’ and ‘Los Santos Inocentes’ dies at 86

The 86-year-old director Mario Camus has died at his home in Santander. The director who moved us with the film adaptation of the work of MIguel Delibes Los Santos Inocentes and who portrayed our postwar country in the adaptation of Beehive with which he won the Golden Bear in Berlin in 1982.

The director, who received the Goya of honor in 2011, made film adaptations of literary classics also beyond Delibes or Camilo José Cela, adapting novels such as Fortunata and Jacinta or The city of prodigies. With more than 45 years of career and more than 30 jobs both as screenwriter, director and even as director of the bandit series Curro Jiménez, which marked a whole generation.

His career as a director was not among the priorities of this Santander born in 1935, and who graduated in Law. For “Los santos inocentes” he won the award for best film in 1984 at the “Ciudad de Bogotá” Film Biennial, the Ecumenical award for best film in 1984 at the Cannes Film Festival, the award for Artistic Merit and Best Film at the Alexandria Film Festival and also the Best Film Award at the Durban and Varna Film Festivals in 1985. It has also received a National Film Award from the Ministry of Culture in 1985 and a Goya for best screenplay awarded by the Academy of Sciences and Cinematographic Arts of Spain for the film “Sombras en una battle” in 1993. In addition to the honorary Goya in 2011, he received the Goya for Best Original Screenplay for Shadows in a battle.
