Marshmello, David Guetta … Who is the most popular DJ at the moment?

(ETX Daily Up) – Many DJs have been idling the decks since the start of the pandemic. But not all. The stars of the medium like David Guetta, Marshmello or Skrillex continue to enjoy great popularity. The Viberate platform has established a ranking of the most popular DJs this year.

This ranking was revealed after the trade magazine DJ Mag announced the winners of its annual Top 100 survey of DJs. Frenchman David Guetta topped the charts for the second time in his career, ahead of Dutchman Martin Garrix and Armin van Buuren.

Viberate however attests that its algorithms do not support these results. The American Marshmello occupies the first place in his ranking, thanks to the two billion views he has accumulated on YouTube and the 51.9 million music lovers who follow him on Spotify. He is followed by Frenchman David Guetta and British-Norwegian Alan Walker. The videos of the 53-year-old DJ, composer and producer have generated 1.2 billion views on YouTube, and those of his younger brother 1.4 billion. But the French DJ far exceeds the interpreter of “Faded” on Shazam, where his tracks have been identified on the application 36.4 million times.

Viberate’s Top 10 also features Calvin Harris, The Chainsmokers, Martin Garrix, Tiësto, Skrillex, DJ Snake and Alok. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Armin van Buuren and Afrojack are not among them, although they reign supreme in the ranking of the magazine DJ Mag.

The power of collaborations and memes

If the pandemic has hit the world of electronic music head-on, some DJs have been able to do well. This is particularly the case of the Kazakhstani Imanbek, who occupies 49th place in the ranking of Viberate. Last March, he won the Grammy Award for best remix for his reinterpretation of “Roses” by American rapper Saint Jhn. A consecration for this self-taught musician from the small town of Aksou, in the Pavlodar region, in northern Kazakhstan.

Collaborations have a real impact on the popularity of DJs. German producer and DJ Topic and Swedish artist A7S have jumped over 800 places in Viberate’s Top 100 thanks to their hits “Breaking Me” and more recently “Your Love”.

Memes and Internet culture can also boost some careers. British DJ Riton has collaborated with Mufasa and Hypeman for his latest single, “Friday”. If the track is based on the melody of a remix of “Push the Feeling On” by Nightcrawler, its popularity is mainly linked to the presence of the influencer duo. They stood out on TikTok in April 2020, thanks to their crazy choreography on “Push the Feeling On” filmed from a moving car. A challenge imitated by celebrities like Katy Perry, Gordon Ramsey and even Kanye West.
