B Subhash’s ‘Disco Dancer’ is all set to be made into a play. The musical will be produced by the popular music director duo of Salim-Sulaiman. B Subhash, when contacted, confirmed the development, adding, “I have given the screenplay rights of the film to Salim-Sulaiman and they are collaborating with Sa Re Ga Ma on it.”

Music director-turned-producer Salim Merchant, too, confirmed the development. “But due to the lockdown, rehearsals are on hold once everything opens up and the government gives us permission we will restart work on it,” he informed.

The Mithun Chakraborty-starrer 1982 film was all the rage upon its release heralding the disco era in Bollywood. Who does Subhash Ji see reprising the disco dancer role in the musical? “Films and plays are two different mediums and I really don’t know who will be to able play that character,” he muses. Ask Salim the same and he refuses to divulge a name, only revealing that it will be ‘big’.

The ‘Disco Dancer’ song ‘Jimmy Jimmy’ is a huge hit worldwide, especially in Russia. “I was overwhelmed with the response it got. Although the music is with Sa Re Ga Ma and I have no idea which songs will be used from the film, I would want them to keep ‘Jimmy Jimmy’ and ‘I Am A Disco Dancer’ in the musical as they are integral to the story,” says the filmmaker.

‘Disco Dancer’, a story about a street dancer’s transition to a disco dancer, was written by Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza and also starred Kim and Om Puri.
