Directed and written by Domee Shi -author of the short ‘Bao’-, the new Disney and Pixar film opens on March 11, 2022.
“I’m Mei Lee. Seen what I want. I say how I want. Anytime. Any day of the year. This is going to be the best year ever and nothing will stand in my way.” This is how the protagonist of Red, the new Disney and Pixar movie that opens on March 11. As you can imagine, something will get in the way: overnight becomes a huge red panda. You can see the trailer just published on these lines.
As his mother reveals, his ancestors have a mystical connection to red pandas. “This little oddity runs in the family,” he tells the young woman, who cannot accept being transformed into a gigantic creature. The thing has a trick and it is that it only comes to light if it is excited by something. As soon as she’s relaxed, she’s back to being her usual Mei Lee.
Red it is an excuse to talk about the usual changes in puberty. Maybe there are no red bears involved, but shame, lack of security and blush are the usual qualities of that time that make us all become little monsters. Again, Pixar and Disney know how to translate a universal theme into a story for all audiences.
In the case of a film about adolescence, the ‘boy band’ for which Mei Lee drinks the winds could not be missed. “We needed our character to be obsessed with something that her mother didn’t like at all,” said director Domee Shi, “The boy bands were the first approach to the world of boys for many girls of that age. They were all gorgeous, polite and loving, and they were a link between the girls and their best friends. “
Music occupies a large part of Mei’s life and, in the advance that you can see on these lines, they have relied on NSYNC’s ‘It’s Gonna Be Me’, in addition to presenting the official soundtrack, composed by Billie Eilish and FINNEAS. The original song of the film appears in the first seconds of advance.
The director of the film is Domee Shi, author of the popular short Bag that recounted the relationship between a mother and her now independent son. Here it is still within the family theme, since Mei Lee’s mother will be a key element in the story and, it seems, the one who will help her control the panda bear. Friendship will be another important point. “We love you, Mei, you’re great,” say the protagonist’s friends as they merge into a big hug.
Red opens in theaters on March 11, 2022.
