The best horror movies to be released in 2022

We review the calendar of genre releases that we will be able to see from January both in movie theaters and on streaming platforms.

With an increasing number of genre films released throughout the year, fantasy is one of the great phenomena at the international box office. And this 2021, films like Halloween Kills, Maligno or the flaming winner of the Palme d’Or Titane give a good example of it. The production companies and distributors are already preparing their catalog for fans of the fantastic, with products with which to be very scared in the movie theater (or from the sofa at home) and we compile the best horror films that we can see during the next year 2022. Tapes such as Scream, Black Phone or Salem ‘s Lot that will delight fans during the next months.

‘The grandmother’ (premiere January 5 in theaters)

Shortly after immersing himself in the world of the dramatic ‘thriller’ with Quien a Hiermata, Valencian director Paco Plaza returns to the genre that has given him so many joys with La abuela. Scripted by the filmmaker Carlos Vermut, the feature film tells the story of a promising Spanish model who has to abandon her dream in Paris to return to Madrid to take care of her grandmother. The old woman can no longer fend for herself nor does she seem to have contact with the outside world. The young woman barely tries to make the last days of the person she loves the most in the world easier. His problems will come when he begins to realize that his family member hides a dark secret and there may be a malicious plan that he does not know and that will put his own life in danger. The film was one of the great sensations of the past San Sebastián and Sitges festivals.

‘Scream’ (released January 14 in theaters)

Ten years after the last installment (Scream 4) -and with a series inspired by the franchise in between- the mythical ‘slasher’ created by Wes Craven returns under the title of the 1996 original: Scream. On this occasion, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Wedding Night), also known as Radio Silence, are in charge of going behind the scenes in directing duties. The film brings us back to the town of Woodsboro more than 20 years after the first murders at the hands of ‘Ghostface’ happened. Performers Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette reprise the roles of Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley, respectively to face a new and bloodthirsty masked criminal.

‘The wasteland’ (premiere January 26 on Netflix)

After passing through the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival (you can read our chronicle about it here), David Casademunt’s behind-the-scenes debut comes to the Netflix streaming platform. In El Páramo, a family of three members (played by Inma Cuesta, Roberto Álamo and little Asier Flores), who live isolated on a remote mountain farm is harassed by a mysterious force that harasses them, truncating their quiet life. Shot in various places in the province of Teruel, the film promises to become one of the national genre sensations of the season.

‘Black Phone’ (released February 11 in theaters)

Once the production of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was abandoned – due to creative differences with Disney – director Scott Derrickson returns to the genre that has given him the most joy throughout his career with Black Phone. In it we know the story of ‘The Captor’ (played by the director’s fetish actor: Ethan Hawke), a criminal who kidnaps children to lock them up, torture them and finally murder them. One bad day, little Finney Shaw crosses his path and ends up locked in a dark room. While his best friend and his family look for him incessantly, the little boy spends his days in that sinister place where there is only a black telephone on the wall. Mysteriously, he will begin to receive calls on the device -which also seems to be disconnected- with what appear to be the voices of other children killed by the man. These conversations will help you try to escape your kidnapper and a more than certain death.

‘Veneciafrenia’ (released April 24 in theaters)

The director Álex de la Iglesia, goes back behind the cameras in a feature film (after the success of the series 30 coins on HBO) with this Venicefrenia. The film, which It is the first installment of a new national horror film label called The Fear Collection, is the first ‘slasher’ made by the Basque filmmaker. With a cast of familiar faces, led by actresses Ingrid García Jonsson and Silvia Alonso, the film focuses on a group of young Spanish tourists who travel to the Italian city of Venice to spend a few days of culture and debauchery. But their adventure will turn into a nightmare when they have to face a group of masked Venetians who hate tourists and want to kill them in the bloodiest and most brutal way possible.

‘Malnazidos’ (Spring 2022 in theaters in theaters)

The Spanish film industry has shown that it can venture to produce films that mix horror and comedy and succeed. A good account of this is given by titles such as Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi or [REC]³ Genesis. But this time, director Javier Ruiz Caldera (Superlópez) has gone a step further – along with his co-director Alberto de Toro – and has mixed the zombie genre with the Spanish Civil War. We are talking about Malnazidos, a tape that -due to several delays derived from the Coronavirus pandemic- It was the opening film of the Sitges Festival 2020, but it won’t hit theaters for a few months. It tells the story of Jan Lozano (Miki Esparbé), captain of the fifth brigade of the last side, who is imprisoned by the republican militias. If you want to escape the death sentence you will have to do a suicide mission, but then the undead begin to appear, and these enemies will have to join forces against a greater danger.

‘Salem’s Lot’ (released September 9 in theaters)


Inspired by the popular novel written by Stephen King in 1975 -and which also had its television adaptation- Salem’s Lot it is the great gender commitment by Universal Pictures for the second half of 2022. With autobiographical touches, the film tells the story of successful writer Ben Mears, who returns to the city that gives the film its title, where he hopes to write a new novel about the Marsten mansion. The author that it is a haunted house that attracts sinister men, and that it has many tragic stories inside it (in fact. He himself saw a ghostly creature inside the house when he was ten years old). He soon discovers that it has just been rented to the antique dealers Richard K. Straker and his partner Kurt Barlow who is traveling permanently. It is then that he begins to suspect that his new owners are some kind of vampires.

With the successes of Let me out and We – in addition to the Lovecraft Territory series – the Jordan Peele factory (Monkeypaw Productions) proved to be the new sensation in American fantasy cinema. If last summer, the company reaped great success among fans of the genre with the new version of Candyman (which had the director Nia DaCosta behind the scenes) in spring 2022 the long-awaited Nope will hit theaters. Little is known about an argument, which is kept in great secret, only that it will be a horror film with a racial subtext as its director is accustomed to us.. Again, Peele retells Daniel Kaluuya (in a role that was originally for Jesse Plemons), accompanied by Steven Yeun, Keke Palmer, Barbie Ferreira and Brandon Perea. Although it does not have a definitive release date for Spain, it will arrive in the United States on July 22.

‘Dark Harvest’ (released September 23 in theaters)


The director of 30 days of darkness returns, after a few years working in television, to horror movies with Dark Harvest. In this adaptation of Norman Partridge’s novel, described as a cross between Battle Royale and The Long Walk, a group of boys and girls decide to face a supernatural murderer who appears every year on Halloween who they call October Boy. Killing this dangerous criminal armed with a huge knife seems the only hope for young people to escape from a town that holds no hope for the future. But it is not an easy task, since this supernatural creature appears from the cornfields every year to sow a trail of death and blood. In addition, this curse hides a dark secret that everyone will know once his dangerous mission begins.

‘Halloween Ends’ (released October 15 in theaters)

This year it came to theaters Halloween Kills, the sequel to Halloween night, a product that worked as a sequel / reboot of the franchise started by John Carpenter in 1978. Well, for approximately the same dates in 2022 we will see the closing of this new trilogy devised by screenwriters David Gordon Green and Danny McBride: Halloween Ends. The film will mark the final confrontation between Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and the fearsome killer who has been stalking her for decades: Michael Myers. In the previous installment, the bloodthirsty masked man survives the fire that seemed to have sealed his fate thanks to the help of firefighters and again leaves a trail of death in his wake. The residents of Haddonfield, New Jersey, fed up with suffering Myers’ acts, go into a rage and are dedicated to looking for him around town to kill him. The film has become one of the highest grossing genre titles of the year.

‘Visitor’ (theatrical release sometime in 2022)

The Sitges Fantastic Film Festival is always a good platform for the launch of a good number of national genre products. That is the case of Visitor, a debut by the director Alberto Evangelio, which went through the Official Section of the last edition. In the film we learn about the terrifying story of Marga, who in the midst of a marital crisis, decides to spend a few days alone in her family’s house in the village. There, an entity tries to communicate with her. Little by little he begins to suspect that this presence corresponds to that of his late sister, who died years ago under strange circumstances.. There is still no confirmed release date for a film that promises to become one of the national genre sensations in 2022.
