‘The Lord of the Rings’ is the series that will star in 2022, but Amazon Prime Video has to be careful

From the ‘streaming’ platform they assure that they are thinking very seriously how they are going to plan their release schedule for the year, with the second season of ‘The Wheel of Time’ also on the horizon.

The new year that we have just welcomed is approaching full of great premieres on the television stage. However, if there is one that stands out above all of them, that is without a doubt that of the series of The Lord of the rings, the most ambitious project in Amazon Prime Video and we would dare to say that of any ‘streaming’ platform. In development at Amazon Studios since 2017, the first series set in the universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien it will finally arrive in 2022. And so important is its debut that the streaming platform announced the chosen premiere date a year in advance. Take note: The series of The Lord of the rings It will premiere on September 2.

Developed by ‘showrunners’ John D. Payne and Patrick McKay, lThe series does not yet have an official title or, if it does, it has not yet been released. What has been advanced is that it will have a second season -which is currently being worked on-, the actors and actresses that make up the cast, and some small descriptions that do not reveal much more detail than the period of history in which it will be set. More than enough to make the billions of Middle-earth lovers around the world nervous and excited at the idea of seeing Tolkien’s universe expand.

Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ seeks to break the mold: “You’ve never seen a series like this”

According to official description of the series that has been released to date, “The Amazon Studios series brings to the screen for the first time the heroic legends of the Second Age of Middle-earth history.” Set, “thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit Y The Lord of the rings JRR Tolkien’s “fiction will take viewers back to an” era where great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell into ruin, unexpected heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest threads and the greatest villain to ever emerge from Tolkien’s pen threatened to plunge the world into darkness. ”

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows a group of characters, both new and familiar, as they face the much-feared resurgence of evil in Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elven capital Lindon, to the impressive island of the kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will endure in our legacy long after that they are gone

Likewise, among its protagonists, we find the names of Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, among a long etcetera.

However, although The Lord of the rings be the series destined to star in the serial scene in 2022, The truth is that Amazon Prime Video has another series in its portfolio that, if not as important, is at least quite close to it.

We refer, of course, to The Wheel of Time, the series adaptation of the homonymous literary saga by Robert Jordan. Led by Rafe Judkins and starring Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, fiction took on the ambitious task of adapting one of the most acclaimed fantasy sagas of recent times and it was no easy task. The project also took several years to materialize and At its premiere, it already had great confidence from Amazon, which has already guaranteed a minimum of three seasons that will undoubtedly end up being many more.

The premiere of the first season last November quickly made it the platform’s most-watched new series in 2021 and its excellent reception must be taken into account by Amazon when making decisions about its future. That is, choosing a suitable moment for its premiere that is not affected by the debut of the other great fantasy series that they have in hand.

And in those they are, as confirmed to TVLine Amazon executive Vernon Sanders. The company’s programming manager has spoken about how the company would schedule the launches of both fantasy series, ensuring that they are considering the options, but without offering the answer:

We’re going to think a lot about how we launch these titles. In our heads, they are very different series, but we are aware of our fans of the genre and we are excited about the collection of content we have for them.

Also, Vernon has mentioned that they have other great fantasy and science fiction series that have them really “excited”: The Expanse, The Boys, Carnival Row and the new series developed by the creators of Westworld Jonathan Nolan y Lisa Joy, The Peripheral.

On season 2 of The Wheel of Time, Sanders promises a more ambitious entry. “We absolutely go into season 2 with a real conversation about ‘What can we make even better now that we’ve introduced this huge world and established these characters? So I can predict that season 2 will be bigger, bolder, and a More expansive Wheel of Time “.
