To the most beautiful roots of jazz

the essential
Last night, Act III of Albi jazz festival at the Grand Théâtre welcomed Pierre de Bethmann trio and Arielle Besson Quartet. Another beautiful evening.

Going after De Pourquery and Suarez is no easy feat. The two jazzmen have set the bar very high with different universes.

It is Pierre de Bethmann in trio who has the honor of launching the evening with two partners, Nelson Veras on guitar, and Sylvain Romano on double bass. Their playing field is infinite for the pianist and his accomplices. From Schumann to Vian, from Brassens to Stevie Wonder, from Cole Porter to Sam River, each re-reading is a lesson. The public was not disappointed by their virtuosity. High-end musicians presented a jazz concert which, certainly, must have been appreciated by the purists.

Solos, duets of very high musical technicalities. Let’s admit that Pierre de Bethmann has genius between his fingers. Fingers that bring us to a brilliant recomposition of the soundtrack of the film “A heart in winter”, a masterpiece with Belmondo and Gabin. We will not forget either an air of King Nougaro. Pierre de Bethmann offered a high quality concert, playing with the standards of a repertoire drawn from multiple musical traditions. We can just ask him that his musical genius be a little more in touch with the public.

The infinite beauty of the trumpet

Spent this hour with Pierre de Bethmann, make way for the gifted trumpet player Airelle Besson and her Quartet. Winner of the Django-Reinhardt prize from the Jazz Academy and the Victoires du Jazz in the category “French instrumental revelation of the year”, she is both a sought-after sidewoman and an assertive leader and composer. After more than five years of concerts, the quartet has found its place. Benjamin Moussay sets the tone. Powerful and whole, the voice of Lynn Cassier joins the playing of Airelle Besson with absolute delicacy, Fabrice Moreau magnifies the whole. When the trumpet plays like that, you want to sit down, enjoy, close your eyes and let yourself be carried away. It’s too beautiful, too bewitching, accompanied by dreams and talented musicians of such great quality. Thank you for this party.
