(AFP) – The new James Bond, ‘Die Can Wait’, had the best UK launch of any film in the franchise, Universal Pictures announced on Tuesday, grossing £ 25million (€ 29million) on the weekend.
Released Thursday in the UK and Ireland, the film, which is the last with actor Daniel Craig in the clothes of His Majesty’s most famous spy, won in three days big number one in the box- English office.
The launch of “Die Can Wait” is also the 6th best film debut of all time in the UK.
What arouse the hope of a revival for the British film industry battered by the Covid-19 and after the multiple postponements suffered by this large-budget production.
The film, which also stars Rami Malek, Lashana Lynch and Ana de Armas, is now visible in 54 countries (but not yet in France or the United States). It grossed a total of $ 121 million ($ 104 million), according to Universal, making it the first Hollywood release to exceed $ 100 million without counting China among its opening markets.
“Die Can Wait” is conceived as the epilogue of the five James Bond starring Daniel Craig, since “Casino Royale” 15 years ago.
The character invented by the writer Ian Fleming is taken from his retirement to face his best enemies: Blofeld, the SPECTER organization and especially the formidable Safin (Rami Malek).
Fans of 007 flocked to all UK cinemas over the weekend, motivated by the many positive reviews for the film which should have been released in March 2020.
“It’s better than good. It’s beautiful,” raved Kevin Maher, film critic at The Times, who awarded it the maximum five stars. “Craig has an imposing charismatic presence from start to finish, and he bows out in a great style, full of emotion.”
Others however regretted the length of the film (2:43), the longest of the 25 of the saga.
